DLR led a Special Issue in the International Journal of Remote Sensing, April 2014

“Remote Sensing the Mekong”. This is the title of a Special Issue of the International Journal of Remote Sensing, published in April 2014. The special issue contains a variety of scientific papers dealing with pressing questions related to the Mekong. The issue contains studies on extensive land cover product comparisons for the Mekong Basin, research on climate change impacts especially in the upper catchment of the Mekong, an array of wetland analyses for the Mekong Delta or Tonle Sap Lake, as well as analyses of Mekong Delta coastal water sediment load, amongst other. Dr.

Tran Thai Binh defended his PhD succesfully at University of Bonn, December 4th, 2013

On December the 4th early in the morning, Tran Thai Binh successfully defended his thesis with the title "The knowledge-based search for water-related information system for the Mekong Delta, Vietnam". Binh developed an ontology in order to provide holistic results to user queries. E.g. if a user wants to monitor floods in a special region within a defined period od time, then Binh's system returns relevant datasets showing water level information, inundation maps as well as relevant literature and statistical data on the topic.

WISDOM Project Presentation at DFD-DLR Institute Evaluation, October 2013

At the end of October 2013 the WISDOM project was one item on the agenda of the DLR-DFD Institute Evaluation in Oberpfaffenhofen.
During the 3-day evaluation process, an advisory group of 11 external experts from science and industry as well as internal DLR advisors examined research results at German Aerospace Center (DLR).
The WISDOM Information System was presented live as one successful outcome of an applied research project during the internal tour for the panel of experts.

WISDOM Closure Meeting at DLR in Oberpfaffenhofen

On September 19th, 2013 the WISDOM Closure Meeting was organized by DLR in Oberpfaffenhofen. About 30 WISDOM scientists including several PhD candidates from the WISDOM PhD Programme participated in this last project meeting. After a comprehensive summary of the second project phase given by the project leader Claudia Künzer all Work Package leaders held presentations on accomplished work of the second WISDOM phase. Furthermore, they reported the status of the PhD work and their expected finalization.

Local Entrepreneurship in Vietnam’s Rural Transformation: A Case Study from the Mekong Delta

 

This report provides an overview of the main results of a survey on small and mediumsized
enterprises, implemented in Can Tho City, Mekong Delta in 2011 ‐ 2012.

José Miguel Delgado successfully defended his PhD thesis at the University of Potsdam, June 10th, 2013

On Monday June 10th José Miguel Delgado successfully defended his Dissertation entitled "Explaining change in flood hazard in the Mekong river - the hypothesis of nonstationary variance" at the Institute of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Potsdam. In his work José analysed the flood regime of the Mekong river and detected significant changes in variance of the annual floods.

WISDOM 6th PhD Scientific Seminar

Organized and hosted by UNU-EHS, the third PhD Scientific Seminar of WISDOM’s second project phase took place from June 10th to 12th, 2013 at the UN Campus in Bonn. Together with the three seminars held in the first phase, this was the sixth such an event which provided the PhD students the opportunity to present and discuss their research results with fellow researchers within the project. Additionally, invited experts were also involved in discussions of possible synergies and the integration of research findings into the WISDOM Information System.

Vo Quoc Tuan successfully defended his PhD thesis at the University of Kiel, May 24th, 2013

Vo Quoc Tuan, who has been working at the German Aerospace Center, DLR, for the past 3.5 years successfully defended his PhD thesis at University of Kiel on May 24th 2013. His thesis has been associated to the WISDOM project, while funding came from a Worldbank Grant via Can Tho University, CTU. Topic of the thesis has been the valuation of ecosystem services of mangrove forests in the coastal Mekong Delta province of Ca Mau. Vo Quoc Tuan has published two SCI papers in renowned journals, and a third paper is currently under review.

MONRE received the WISDOM Information System

On the 14th of March MONRE received the hard- und software to run the WISDOM Information System within their institute. The handover was accompanied with a two day workshop. The first day provided an update on new functionalities for users and administrators. The second day gave a roadmap to MONRE on technical and institutional steps, which are necessary operationalize the Information System. The workshop was concluded by the handover of the Server, including the preinstalled Information System as well as the extensive technical documentation.

 

New publication of SISS and ZEF: Water as a Strategic Resource: The Mekong Delta in Vietnam

Nước là nguồn chiến lược: Đồng bằng sông Cửu Long (in English: Water as a Strategic Resource: The Mekong Delta in Vietnam) is the titel of a new book published im May 2013 by the Vietnamese Academy of Social Sciences (VASS). The book is a co-production of the Southern Institute of Social Sciences (SISS) in Ho Chi Minh City and the Center for Development Research (ZEF) in Germany (editors: Prof. Bui The Cuong und Prof. Solvay Gerke), who are both partners in the WISDOM project.

Mekong Environmental Symposium 2013, successful 3-day event in Ho Chi Minh City, 5-7 March 2013

The Mekong Environmental Symposium 2013 in Ho Chi Minh City was a full success.

On the first day of the symposium over 400 stakeholder, decisions maker, scientists, and other Mekong experts joined the event. Three Vietnamese Vice Ministers (MOST, MONRE, MARD), as well as vice ministers of environment and high ranking delegates of the other Mekong riparian countries as well as the CEO of the Mekong River Commission joined the event.

WISDOM at the “Climate Change and Climate Extremes in Vietnam” Workshop

Dr. Joern Birkmann (UNU-EHS) presented some selected findings of the WISDOM project in a high level expert workshop on “Climate Change and Climate Extremes in Vietnam”. The expert workshop in Hanoi on 17th of August 2012 dealt with the launch of the IPCC SREX report, which was presented by Prof. Pachauri /Chairman of the IPCC and lead authors of the report, such as Dr. Bach Tanh Sinh / Director of the Dep. of Science and Technology, Ministry of Science and Technology and Dr. Joern Birkmann / United Nations University – Institute for Environment and Human Security.

Mekong Delta Tour IV accomplished

The 4th Mekong Tour had been accomplished by the 27th of July 2012. The capacity building team with active support from DLR visited 4 provinces (Tra Vinh, Bac Lieu, Ca Mau and Can Tho). Subject of the Workshops were the life cylce of the WISDOM Information System as a platform for storing, visualizing and sharing geographical data.

Nadine Reis receives the 2012 KfW award for best PhD thesis

Nadine Reis was awarded the KfW Prize for practice-relevant development research for her doctoral thesis on "Tracing and Making the State. Policy Practice and Domestic Water Supply in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam". Nadine Reis was a PhD candidate of the first phase of the WISDOM project and wrote her thesis at the Center for Development Research (ZEF).

WISDOM Project Coordination meets MONRE Vice Minister Dr. Nguyen Thai Lai

WISDOM Project Coordinator Dr. Claudia Kuenzer and WISDOM local CIM expert Florian Moder on 12th of July 2012 were received by the Vice Minister of Vietnam's Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, MONRE, and discussed the pathway ahead for the implementation of the Mekong Delta Information System.
