Optimized recycling of nutrients and minimization of greenhouse gases by humification of sludge in the Mekong Delta

The construction was completed in January 2012 for the batch scale experiments and in May 2012 for the pilot scale experiments. Until October 2012 time will be used for growing of plants and development of a sludge layer at the surface that experiments on steady-state-conditions can start at the beginning of the next dry season.

 

Pesticides, nutrients, antibiotics in the Mekong Delta

Main activities in the project part „ Pesticides, nutrients, antibiotics in the Mekong Delta” are field research on the following topics

  1. Environmental footprint of agricultural practices with respect to surface water pollution (PhD thesis La Thi Nga, jointly supervised with INRES - Plant Nutrition, University of Bonn)
  2. Development of risk assessment (hot-spot) maps for drinking water quality (pesticides and antibiotics) in the Mekong Delta (PhD thesis Nguyen Dang Chau, jointly supervised with INRES – Soil Science, University of Bonn)
  3. Risk Assessment of surface-, and groundwater quality associated with drinking and irrigation purposes for selected nutrients, heavy metals and microbial pollution in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam (PhD thesis Gert-Jan Wilbers, jointly supervised with INRES - Plant Nutrition, University of Bonn
A Typology of the rice based cropping systems of the Mekong Delta

Within the Master thesis that has been submitted by MSc Kajo Stelter in March 2012, the actual practice of Rice based cropping systems was characterized according to their water pollution potential. Experts at the Can Tho University and farmers in three agro ecological zones have been interviewed to find out what are typical farming practices regarding input of fertilizer and pesticides.

Results on Pesticides in October 2009

The pesticide monitoring campaign started August 2008 and ended September 2009. To date, surface water samples taken between August 2008 and April 2009 are analysed. Thirteen of the fifteen target compounds (buprofezin, butachlor, cypermethrin, difenoconazole, endosulfan sulphate, fenobucarb, fipronil hexaconazole, isoprothiolane, profenofos, pretilachlor, propanil and propiconazole) were detected in water samples taken at the two study sites from field discharges and irrigation canals. The detection frequencies are shown in figure 1.

Preliminary monitoring results

First results of the monitoring activities are available for the period mid August – end October 2008. In Ba Lang three types of fungicides - Hexaconazole, Propiconazole and Difenoconazole - were detected in the samples. Propiconazole and Hexaconazole were recorded in nearly all samples in concentrations up to 0.78 and 0.14 µg/l respectively. Concentrations decrease in the samples from August to end October.
